Eight Years in the Making: The Story Behind Generate Music

Eight years ago in Croatia, my PRISM Quartet bandmates and I visited an exhibition on the history of “degenerate music” (Entartete Musik) — the label the Nazis used to target work that defied their racist ideology — and came face to face with “Jonny,” a caricature meant to conflate and debase Black and Jewish identity.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Generate Music is what came from that moment — a way to turn “degenerate” into generate: an act of creativity and empathy instead of erasure.

“Requiem for AJ” is out today. The album arrives August 14. The concert film premieres free, live on YouTube, August 7.
